NDM News case study: Audience and Institution

1)What are the key statistics relating to the influence of new and digital media?
Since 2013 there has been an increased in the number of people stating a website/app as  their most important news source (21% in 2014 vs 14% in 2013).Almost half (45%) of 16-24's say their most news source is a website/app,up 15 percentage points since 2013 (30%).In this stats it states people(everyone) have said their there most important news source is a website/app as its increase from 2013 to 2014 by 7% more saying website/app is their most important news source. Then the second sentence has a stats that states that from 2013 30% to 45% in a year its had increased of 16-24's said that their that website/app is their most important news source.

Another stats was that 16-24's years old consumed only 27 hours of news on television in the same period, compared to 196 hours for those aged 55 years old. This indicates that 16-24 year old are more active on their phones or laptops receiving their news on internet or social media or even apps. So they don't need the TV to watch live news as those age 55 years old are not on social media or probably have phones.

2) Come up with an example of an institution that has benefited from the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. Explain how new technology has helped the institution and try to find statistics or financial figures that support your point.
BBC has benefited from the success of new and digital media as they receive a lot of followers on account and they link a tweet to their website and people re-tweet an click to find out more information on the story.BBC news being so reliable has resulted in the younger generation taking notice and so they follow them on news and suddenly they have taken an interests in news. Then this turned into them having a lot of people having their app on their as they allow the reader to read stories, watch videos and live stream as the app ins credible as it updates every second.

3) Find an example of an institution that has suffered as a result of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. In what way has it had a negative impact? Again, try and find actual statistics or financial figures to explain your point.

4) Answer the following question in a mini-essay on your blog:

Music streaming just became a billion-dollar industry

South Korean speedskater Lee Kyou-Hyuk trains at the Adler Arena Skating Center during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, RussiaRevenues from streaming songs on the internet has passed $1bn for the first time, new figures have shown.

The article talks about how digital streaming music as become so big and made so much money over the past years.
  • Digital music streaming has grown is taking over

  • Streaming revenue as a whole surpassed $1bn in the first half of the year for the first time
  • Spotify is the most popular
  • customers pay for subscriptions and have access to all the songs, albums and mixtapes in the world
  • CD's ,then iTunes and now streaming has taken over
In my opinion this is a great thing for the music industry and the fans of music as we can stream anything just by our subscriptions. Some musician such as Taylor swift said she didn't want her music to be on their she thought it would not generate enough revenue for herself but look now.She is probably not happy about this because everyone streams music nowadays.

PewDiePie and KSI take their YouTube fame to the mobile app stores

PewDiePie: Legend of the Brofist is the YouTube star's first game.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/24/youtube-pewdiepie-ksi-mobile-apps

This article is made a the guardian talking about how 2 YouTube sensations,KS1 10 millions subscribers and pewdiepie who has over 30 millions subscribers and how they have now made mobile apps for their fans to purchase.

  • Pewdiepie app, is a game they can play and was trending on the free to play app store.
  • Released on android and ios
  • KSI app was a football app with videos, pictures and a mini football game to play
  • Also KSI had a book out the same and so he was trending on twitter for very long time because people wanted to get their hands on it
  • They are the most successful YouTubers of our day and are branching out to become more of a brand names
  • Pewdiepie earned 7.4 million in 2014
In my opinion this is a really good thing for youtube as it has been growing and growing year in and year out.My view on youtube is that i love because it because has sports, music, vlogs and interview ,news and etc.So normal people make videos and upload and so they attack the gap in the market. Thats what ksi had done, he made videos of himself playing fifa and making funny videos and so on and people really loved it had received a huge following such as more subscribers and more followers on social network.Over the courses of the years he has become a multi millionaire.Getting more and more sponsorship, now he has become a entrepreneur releasing music, a book and now a app.Its amazing to see where Youtube just gets you and i think more people should do it for something they are passionate for and love.So they should attack that gap in the market,

BBC to launch new streaming service in the US

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/digital-media/11872835/BBC-to-launch-new-streaming-service-in-America.html

BBC to launch new streaming service in the US

The logo for the Broadcasting House, the headquarters of the BBC is displayed outside on July 25, 2015 in London, England

  1. The BBC is aiming to increase revenues from its commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, by more than 15pc to £1.2bn by 2020. Lord Hall has said cost cuts of 20pc will be required over the next five years.
  2. Previous attempts to make money online from foreign viewers have proved difficult. The experimental global iPlayer, which charged a subscription, was scrapped in June. It was never launched in the US amid opposition from pay-TV operators who carry the BBC America channel
BBC will launch a new streaming service abroad to raise more money from commercial sources abroad. The service will provide the usual bbc content such news and other programmes that have never been shown in the US.Other abroad channels tried to do what bbc are trying now but they found it very difficult by people say its going to be different as bbc iplayer gets good recognition and views around the world but some cant view the content due to being abroad.
By this the US will be receiving and watching some British content and see our TV traditions such as match of the day and EastEnders. Programmes that we have had for many years and so they will be experiencing the same thing. The streaming service is a good idea for bbc as they receiving more income by commercials abroad is smart as they don't receive commercial income hear but they still very successful. Honestly in my open the source of income will be good but the view wont be the Americans like to have their won style on things and as Hollywood has seen some of the best programmes and films they set the bar very high already. Also viewers wont understand the culture and the slang in some programmes also the accent some say is hard to understand and keep up with.

Bt

BT steps up sport and drama as it tussles with Sky for customer

This article is about the rivalry building between bt and sky as they fight for rights to show sport event on there channels and who ever get the rights to show the more viewers means the more money. They both don't want to lose this competition as they are competitors of each others

  • BT paid almost £900m for exclusive rights over three seasons
  • £400m Sky and ITV had paid for shared rights for the previous three years.
  • successful bid for 38 Premier League games a year in 2012, that deal was a clear signal BT intended to challenge Sky’s dominance
  •  the £5.14bn Premier League deal signed in February shows just how committed Sky is to retaining its position as the UK’s main pay
  • Sky paid £4.2bn for 126 games a year
  • BT paid £960m for 42
  • BT’s pay-TV business remains small with 1.2 million subscribers
  • total audience for BT Sport only rises to 5.2 million
  • Sky, which has just passed the 12 million subscriber mark.
In my opinion the war for the champions league makes the audience feel special and makes it comfortable for them to watch because they don't really care wherever its on they will purchase it and watch. But the companies such as sky don't like the war as they lost the war and so they lose a whole load of customers on Wednesday and Tuesday night as they are watching the champions league. So they lose them to their main competitors bt sports.

Sergey Brin And Larry PageThe impact of Google

1) Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?

As majority of people in the world has internet on their phone or their computer so the purchasing of newspaper is not useful as typing a word in to Google can results in a millions of newspaper, blogs, videos, images so its basically everything in one.

2) Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?

Yes as everyone uses Google to find something out rather than waiting for tomorrows paper. Its accessible every you go and anywhere whatever time you want.So they closing and journalists losing their jobs is because none needing newspapers so they are not making any money back that they are paying the journalists.

3) Read the comments below the article. Pick one comment you agree with and one you disagree with and justify your opinions in detail.

1)You can’t single out Google just because it’s the largest digital company. Patch, for example, invested hundreds of millions into journalism in the US and continues to search for the model that will work going forward. There are many who are investing in the future of journalism.

I agree with this comments as the article really is singling out Google in is not talking about any other search engines or big media institutions that have cancelled out journalism.Such as social networking has cancelled out journalism as there are sourced on twitter to help us found out things much quicker as we follow them it pops up on our time line. This the future of journalism it means anyone with a phone can be  journalist and can get recognition as the post picture and videos and give in depth analysis if what happened.people will take interest in this.

2)Sorry, you didn’t convince me. So what if they didn’t invent the Internet. They did figure out a good way to advertise on other people’s content without sharing anything with the people who did the work. They could have built a system that actually paid the content creators. They could have tossed in a microcent every time someone clicked on a search link. But no, they kept ALL of the money for themselves. And they still do it. They seem to think that Google News is a service. It’s just a leech on the hard-working reporters.

this article i disagree with as its trying to journalist should be getting paid by google as people are searching for there articles on Google. This is unfair as Google is where people want to find things out and Google in the most popular search engine where it brings what you searched in to thousands of different media text.Even though they have other peoples content they still are able to see the article on their website and so they still get the recognition they need.
